Five Weeks in France: A Winemaker’s Perspective on Old World Traditions
In October 2023, my family – Lucy, Ty, Kensi and I – embarked on a five-week journey through the storied wine regions of France.
While the tourist trails beckoned, my focus remained firmly on studying the intricate grape growing and winemaking practices that have shaped the Old World’s reputation for centuries.
The differences between our approaches are vast and, at times, startling.
What struck me most was the distinct reluctance to change within French wine culture.
Those business drivers that influence our constant push for sustainability in Australia are simply less significant in these ancient wine regions.
I suppose when you’re sitting on hundreds of years of history and prestige, it’s easier to justify the mentality of “this is what we have always done.”
Yet, as a New World winemaker, I couldn’t help but question whether tradition alone should dictate modern practices?
